The Evolution of Popular Music

While classical and jazz music have undeniably left a lasting impact on the musical landscape, we cannot overlook the significant influence of popular music on our lives. This eBook is a separate printing of Part I only of Hugh Gilmore's best selling memoir, "My Three Suicides: A Success Story."

Subtitled: “What Music We Heard,” this section was meant to stand alone with the next two parts serving as its sequel. Its theme: "Wherein I learn that no matter how hard I try, I can never be as perfect as the world wants me to be."

In this section, Gilmore vividly shows what happens when a child believes everything he’s been told. In the opening scene, as a three-year-old, his heart’s deepest secret is coaxed from him at breakfast and betrayed at dinner. Looking back, he writes, “I did not know then that love’s arrow could be bent back to pierce the giver.”

He watches everything, trying to understand the gradual and frightening process by which his kind father becomes changed, then distorted, then strangled by the alcoholism that takes control of his life, leaving the family’s life in poverty and shambles.

As the story unfolds, the author is also subjected to a thorough and distorted education in the tenets of the Irish-American Roman Catholic church as they were taught to working class parochial school children in his day. By the time he is ten he feels both fatherless and guilt-ridden while being forced to grow up and act as father to his five siblings. And his own father (!) while being the “man of the house” for his by then religion-obsessed mother.

He turns thirteen and the sexual urges of adolescence present a daily, nearly overwhelming reminder of how weak and imperfect he is in the eyes of the church. After a major failed effort to help his father stop drinking, he comes out of confession one snowy evening feeling so cleansed he is tempted to prolong his spiritual happiness by going directly to heaven. His course of action turns out to be his first experience with learning to live with himself in an honest and accepting way.
