They say life is like a puppet show, with fate pulling the strings from above. But for Joy Laurey, life was not about being controlled by destiny. She was the girl who dared to hold the strings and take control. In a world dominated by uncertainties, Joy Laurey stood out as a beacon of hope, proving that one can overcome any obstacles and shape their own destiny.

The Early Years

Born in a small town in Kansas, Joy Laurey's journey began on a humble note. From an early age, she exhibited a fiery spirit and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Her parents, recognizing her potential, encouraged her to pursue her dreams. With their unwavering support, Joy embarked on a path that would shape her life's purpose.

Despite limited resources in her town, Joy thirsted for knowledge. She would spend hours at the local library, immersing herself in books, and learning about the world beyond her small town. From a young age, she realized the power of education and how it could help her break free from the strings that confined so many others.

As the years passed, Joy's passion for knowledge continued to grow. She excelled in her studies, always striving for excellence. It was during her high school years that she discovered her love for writing. Her words had the power to move mountains, to inspire change, and to break free from the chains that held society hostage.

Breaking Free

After high school, Joy decided to pursue a degree in journalism. She knew that through writing, she could hold the strings of society and shape public opinion. Her journey took her to the bustling city of New York, where she enrolled in one of the nation's top journalism schools.

New York City was a whole new world for Joy. The fast-paced lifestyle, diverse cultures, and endless opportunities captivated her. She dove headfirst into the world of journalism, interned at prestigious news outlets, and honed her skills as a storyteller. Joy's words became a powerful tool for change, stirring emotions, and shedding light on important social issues.

But Joy's ambition wasn't limited to the realm of journalism alone. She recognized that true change could only be achieved by breaking the strings that society wrapped around its people. She saw how societal norms dictated people's lives, limiting their growth and potential. Joy wanted to challenge those norms, to empower individuals to break free from their puppet-like existence.

The Girl Who Pulled The Strings

Joy Laurey's journey of empowerment took various forms. She utilized her writing skills to expose injustices, highlight marginalized voices, and advocate for social change. Her long-form articles became viral sensations, stirring debates and inspiring action. The world was captivated by her ability to pull the strings by simply typing on a keyboard.

But Joy's influence didn't stop at her writing alone. She embarked on speaking tours, conducting workshops, and motivational talks. She shared her own journey of breaking free from society's expectations and encouraged others to do the same. Joy believed that everyone had dreams and potential hidden beneath the strings that bound them. Her mission became to help others find the courage to pull those strings and transcend any limitations imposed upon them.

Joy Laurey's impact reached far and wide. From students in small towns dreaming of a better future, to professionals feeling trapped in unfulfilling careers, her message resonated deeply. She became the voice of change, a symbol of hope, and a testament to the power of individual agency.

A Legacy of Empowerment

After years of inspiring others, Joy Laurey's influence continues to grow. Her books have become bestsellers, touching the hearts of millions around the world. Her articles, speeches, and workshops have empowered countless individuals to break free and pursue their passions.

Joy's story serves as a reminder that we are not mere puppets in the grand scheme of life. We have the power to hold the strings and shape our own destiny. It is a message of empowerment, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of one's true purpose.

In the grand puppet show of life, Joy Laurey was the girl who dared to take control. She defied the expectations society had set for her and carved her own path. Her story inspires us all to reach for the strings and pull, trusting that our own destinies lie within our grasp.

Joy Laurey, one of the pioneers of puppeteering, is forgotten today amongst her contemporaries despite her profound influence and presence in the TV puppetry field.

This book is a celebration of the life of Joy Laurey amid the seventy-first anniversary of BBC’s Whirligig, in which she starred alongside her beloved Mr Turnip. She created many other nostalgic characters in her collaborations with Disney (Mickey Mouse Weekly),Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds),Peter Ling (Doctor Who, Crossroads) and Peter Hawkins (Bill & Ben),though Mr Turnip – her TV debut – is by far her most recognised creation.

Prolific watercolour artist, WWII troop entertainer WWII, successful businesswoman, international puppetry representative of Great Britain, and of course “the girl who pulled the strings” on BBC’s Whirligig.

For the past twenty years, Stuart Woodhead has been a Mr Turnip superfan. A lifelong collector of puppets and vintage toys, over the years he has amassed a wealth of original items, artwork, photographs, theatre programmes, professional stage puppets and other ephemera, and is now founder of ‘The Joy Laurey Archive’.

Many of the photographs within this book are exclusive and never before seen by the public, including behind-the-scenes images on the set of Whirligig, taken by Joy herself at BBC’s Lime Grove Studios, London. There are also archived personal photographs of her trip to Romania for the very first International Puppet Festival in 1958, as well as rare portrait work by Baron, the official Royal photographer.

Stuart Woodhead is passionate about preserving Joy Laurey’s life work and legacy, showcasing what a pivotal figure she was in the world of puppetry, and ensuring that the nation’s favourite and admiring vegetable Mr Turnip will live forever in the hearts and minds of generations to come.
