The Epic Battle of Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Gamble in Making History
Waterloo is undoubtedly one of the most famous battles in history, marking the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and the end of his reign as the Emperor of France. The battle took place on June 18, 1815, near the town of Waterloo in present-day Belgium. It was a clash of titans, pitting Napoleon and his seasoned French army against an allied coalition led by the Duke of Wellington and General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher.
Napoleon's aim was to defeat the allied forces swiftly and reclaim his position of power. He had previously been exiled to the island of Elba after his abdication in 1814, but managed to escape and regain control of France for what would be known as the Hundred Days. The allies had to act quickly to prevent his unwavering ambition from spiraling out of control.
The stage was set for a monumental battle that would shape the destiny of Europe for years to come. Napoleon strategized meticulously, aiming to exploit the divisions within the allied command and strike a decisive blow. To achieve his goal, he amassed an army of approximately 72,000 troops, while the allied forces numbered around 118,000.

On the other side, the allied commanders were not underestimating the threat posed by Napoleon. Although Wellington's troops were significantly outnumbered, they were positioned advantageously on a ridge known as Mont-Saint-Jean. Wellington's men were experienced soldiers, battle-hardened during the Peninsular War, and determined to protect their homeland from the returning Emperor.
As the battle commenced, Napoleon unleashed a series of assaults on the allied lines, aiming to break through and isolate Wellington's army. Throughout the day, the two sides engaged in intense fighting, with neither gaining a significant advantage. However, the sheer number of allied troops gradually began to wear down Napoleon's forces.
The turning point came when Blücher's Prussian forces arrived on the battlefield. Napoleon had hoped to defeat Wellington before the Prussians could reinforce him, but his plan had failed. The Prussians attacked the French army from the east, adding their might to the ongoing struggle.
Realizing the situation had turned against him, Napoleon made a desperate and ultimately fatal mistake. He committed his elite Imperial Guard, renowned for their unwavering loyalty, in a final desperate attempt to turn the tide of the battle. However, even their staunch defense couldn't withstand the combined assaults of the allies, and they were pushed back.
The battle ended in a resounding victory for the allied forces. Napoleon's army was defeated, and he was forced to abdicate once again, this time unconditionally. He was then exiled to the island of Saint Helena, where he would spend the rest of his days until his death in 1821.
The Battle of Waterloo had far-reaching consequences. It marked the end of an era dominated by Napoleon, his ambitious conquests, and military innovations. It reshaped the political landscape of Europe, leading to the restoration of monarchies and the establishment of new alliances.

Part of the ‘Making History Series’ – ‘Waterloo’ is an exciting retelling of one of the moments that shook the world – Waterloo, one of the truly decisive battles of history.
The illustrious ‘Making History Series’, edited by Lisa Jardine and Amanda Foreman, explores an eclectic mix of history's tipping points.
In ‘Waterloo’, Roberts provides not only a fizzing account of one of the most significant forty-eight hour periods of all time, but also a startling interrogation into the methodology of history – is it possible to create an accurate picture from a single standpoint? What we can say for certain about the battle is that it ended forever one of the great personal epics. The career of Napoleon was brought to a shuddering halt on the evening of 18 June 1815. Interwoven in the clear-cut narrative are exciting revelations brought to light by recent research: accident rather than design led to the crucial cavalry debacle that lost the battle. Amongst the all-too-human explanation for the blunder that cost Napoleon his throne, Roberts sets the political, strategic and historical scene, and finally shows why Waterloo was such an important historical punctuation mark.
The generation after Waterloo saw the birth of the modern era: ghastly as the carnage here was, henceforth the wars of the future were fought with infinitely more ghastly methods of trenches, machine-guns, directed starvation, concentration camps, and aerial bombardment. By the time of the Great War, chivalry was utterly dead. The honour of bright uniform and tangible spirit of élan met their final dance at Waterloo.
