The island nation of Union of Comoros consists of three main islands, commonly known by the French names Grande Comoro, Anjouan and Mohéli. There are also many small islands. The people of the fourth main island of the Comoro archipelago, Mayotte, voted in a referendum against unification with the Union of the Comoros in 2011. All islands of the archipelago are of volcanic origin, the height of the volcanoes reaches up to 2361 m. The climate is tropical and maritime. The tropical rainforest, the original vegetation, has largely been pushed back to higher elevations. However, three areas are listed as Ramsar Conservation Areas. Due to their isolation, some endemic bird species have developed on the Comoros, so that the archipelago is listed by BirdLife International as EBA-P (Primary Endemic Bird Area). Economically, the Comoros Union is one of the least developed countries in the world. Tourism is so far insignificant. A visit to the Comoros is definitely an expedition for bird watchers. This multilingual (en, fr, de, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of the Union of the Comoros in color.
