This is the story in diary form of one family’s life in the midst of the significant and sometimes tumultuous events of the founding of a nation. It’s rooted in Pennsylvania, but starts in a small town in the German Palatinate of the 18th century. It involves two particular generations of men and women and children who attempted to live life as best they could despite the events happening around them. The story follows the building of that family and the actions of the individuals within it and within the community as war looms on the horizon and then overtakes life. It begins in 1742 with the arrival of the first member of the family on the shores of Pennsylvania and ends 90 years later with the death of the last member of the second generation. While this is the story of one particular family, it could as easily be the story of other families who lived during these times.
