Imagine a world where sitting in a taxi is not just about getting from one point to another, but also about discovering a new perspective on life. Meet Ivan, a Ukrainian taxi driver with a unique outlook on the world. In this article, we will delve into Ivan's experiences, adventures, and the profound insights he gained while driving around the streets of his beloved city.

The Journey Begins

It all started six years ago when Ivan, a former engineer, decided to switch careers and become a taxi driver. Little did he know that this decision would open doors to a world he never expected to explore. From the moment he started, Ivan treated his taxi as more than just a means of transportation. For him, it became a gateway to experiences beyond the ordinary, a vessel that connected him to people from all walks of life.

As Ivan navigated the bustling streets, he encountered a myriad of individuals, each with their own unique stories. From businessmen discussing their latest deals to couples seeking refuge after a fight, Ivan listened attentively, absorbing their joys, sorrows, and aspirations. Along the way, he realized that his role was not just to transport passengers but to provide a listening ear, a compassionate soul, and a source of comfort during those rides.

Driving Through Cultural Mosaic

Ukraine, a country known for its rich cultural diversity, presented Ivan with an unrivaled opportunity to immerse himself in the stories of its people. Every corner of the city whispered tales of triumph, resilience, and unity. Ivan found himself driving artists who shared their dreams of reviving the country's artistic heritage, elderly war veterans who recounted their untold stories of heroism, and young entrepreneurs eager to bring about change.

Through these encounters, Ivan gained an unprecedented insight into the lives of Ukrainians from different backgrounds. He learned about their traditions, tasted their diverse cuisines, and witnessed their celebrations. Ivan quickly realized that despite the differences in language, religion, and customs, there was a common thread that connected them all – the innate desire for a better future and the unwavering love for their homeland.

Lessons in Humanity

Ivan's role as a taxi driver expanded beyond being a mere observer. He became a teacher and a student of life, absorbing invaluable lessons along the way. He learned how to empathize with the struggles of others, how to find beauty in the smallest of moments, and how to appreciate the little things that often go unnoticed.

One of the most profound lessons Ivan learned was the power of a smile. He realized that a warm smile had the ability to brighten even the darkest of days. As Ivan traversed the city, he made it his mission to greet each passenger with a genuine smile, no matter how challenging his own circumstances may have been. And in return, those smiles he shared sparked a chain reaction, spreading positivity and kindness to those around him.

Seeing the World Through the Windshield

As Ivan continued his taxi journeys, he noticed another remarkable aspect of his experiences – the ever-changing cityscape. The streets he once traveled daily began to transform right before his eyes. New buildings emerged, parks blossomed, and people moved with a rhythm mirroring the pulse of the city.

Ivan's windshield became a canvas on which he witnessed the evolving colors, shapes, and sounds of his surroundings. He began to appreciate the beauty in the way sunlight danced on the pavement, to marvel at the symphony created by the horns honking in synchrony, and to find peace in the quiet moments when passengers reflected upon their lives.

A Journey Unforgettable

Through the eyes of Ivan, the world took on a new dimension. His taxi became a vessel of exploration, discovery, and a bridge connecting people from all walks of life. What started as a career change evolved into a journey of self-discovery, humility, and immense joy.

Now, every time you step into a taxi, take a moment to think about the stories that lie within the driver's eyes, the lessons they carry, and the beauty that surrounds us when we truly open our hearts. You never know when you might stumble upon a Ukrainian taxi driver named Ivan, who will leave an indelible mark on your own journey through life.

“I never thought anybody would ever ask my story.
I never imagined some part of me would be saved for history.”

These are Dmitrii’s parting words. A charming middle-aged man, Dmitrii has an ineffably dangerous way about him. We picked him at random from the thousands of taxi drivers in Odessa - the city known as the ‘Jewel of the Black Sea’.

Two days earlier we spoke to Leonid, a generation older. He told us a story bookended by the Russian Revolutions of 1917 and the war in Eastern Ukraine a century later. A life which was - still is - profoundly affected by both.

But how many stories will never be told? The billions of faces that comprise the vast mosaic of our world, with all it’s teeming humanity: behind each is a limitless depth of experience all its own.

There’s a word for this revelation. Sonder: The realization that each passerby represents an entire lifetime lived, unlike any other - each as vibrant and intricate and bursting with emotion as your own.

Awareness of this vastness of cumulative experience is as exhilarating as it is baffling. It is a notion which is at once daunting and delicious. It is impossible to grok. But it inspires in us an insatiable lust to try. To travel the world to find answers to a deceptively simple question:

“What is it like to be human?”

The premise for this book, the first in a series in Sonderlust, is a simple one. We - Marshall (who was in Ukraine at the time),and Keyur (who was not) - would pick two taxi drivers in Odessa, at random, and ask them to tell us the stories of their lives.
They - not we - would be in charge of the direction of conversation. We had nothing to preempt the narrative other than a few general questions; no angle, and no preconceptions about what we might hear. This book would tell their stories, whatever shape these stories took. Our intuition was that whatever we heard would be worth preserving, worth retelling. We were not disappointed.

Sonderlust animates in us a desire to learn ever more: to seek out the thoughts and perspectives of people who lead lives far different from our own. We want to know their stories - not in the context we imagine we should find them, but in context that they set for themselves. How do they see their own lives? How do they see ours? Not only so that they can speak, but so that we can hear what they have to say.

What can we learn about human nature from the taxi driver in Ukraine? What can the sex worker in Thailand tell us about love, kindness, and gratitude? What does she want most of all for her children - and what’s her favorite kind of fruit? What might the Sherpa in Nepal’s Himalayan highlands have to teach us about how to live a good life, if only we thought to ask?

Join us. To experience human life in all of its endless forms is a sisyphean challenge, but one we eagerly accept. We have to start somewhere: why not here? Jump down the rabbit hole, and see just how far Sonderlust takes you.
