Conservation practices have evolved significantly over the years, and today's world presents several contemporary issues and approaches that contribute to the field. Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment explores these current challenges and provides valuable insights into the conservation sector. In this article, we will delve into the contemporary issues and approaches discussed in this series of books, highlighting their importance and impact.

1. Climate Change and Conservation

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and it has profound implications for conservation efforts. The Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment series examines various approaches to tackle the effects of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural resources. From exploring the impacts of rising temperatures on vulnerable species to discussing adaptation strategies for protected areas, this series offers a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between climate change and conservation.

2. Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Practices

Recognizing the value of indigenous knowledge and traditional practices in conservation is an essential aspect of contemporary approaches. This series sheds light on the rich cultural heritage and expertise of indigenous communities and how their wisdom can contribute to effective conservation measures. By promoting collaborative approaches that incorporate indigenous knowledge systems, the series aims to preserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable management of natural resources.

3. Urban Conservation and Sustainable Development

As cities expand and urbanization accelerates, there is a growing need to incorporate conservation principles into urban planning and development. The Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment series explores innovative approaches to urban conservation, ranging from green infrastructure design to the integration of nature-based solutions in urban areas. These studies highlight the significance of sustainable urban development in preserving biodiversity and improving the quality of life for urban dwellers.

4. Wildlife Trafficking and Illegal Trade

Illegal wildlife trade poses a significant threat to global biodiversity, and curbing this illicit activity requires a multi-faceted approach. This series focuses on the various dimensions of wildlife trafficking, including its impact on endangered species and ecosystems. It also explores approaches to address this issue, such as strengthening legislation and law enforcement, promoting public awareness, and supporting local communities involved in conservation efforts.

5. Technology and Conservation

Advancements in technology have revolutionized conservation practices, offering new tools and techniques to protect species and ecosystems. The Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment series examines the integration of technology in conservation, including the use of remote sensing, spatial analysis, and data-driven management approaches. These studies demonstrate how technology can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of conservation efforts.

6. Socio-economic Considerations in Conservation

Recognizing the interplay between socio-economic factors and conservation is vital for achieving sustainable outcomes. This series highlights the importance of considering socio-economic aspects in conservation decision-making processes. From assessing the economic value of ecosystem services to understanding the social implications of conservation policies, these studies provide valuable insights into creating inclusive and equitable conservation approaches.

The Contemporary Issues and Approaches explored in the Routledge Studies in Conservation and the Environment series offer a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of the challenges faced by the conservation sector. By highlighting the importance of climate change, indigenous knowledge, urban conservation, wildlife trafficking, technology, and socio-economic considerations, the series contributes to the development of effective and sustainable conservation practices. It is crucial for conservation professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the general public to engage with these contemporary issues and approaches to ensure the preservation and protection of our natural world.

This book examines the nexus between conservation, land conflicts, and sustainable tourism approaches in Southern Africa, with a focus on equity, access, restitution, and redistribution.

While Southern Africa is home to important biodiversity, pristine woodlands, and grasslands, and is a habitat for important wildlife species, it is also a land of contestations over its natural resources with a complex historical legacy and a wide variety of competing and conflicting issues surrounding race, cultural and traditional practices, and neoliberalism. Drawing on insights from conservation, environmental, and tourism experts, this volume presents the nexus between land conflicts and conservation in the region. The chapters reveal the hegemony of humans on land and associated resources including wildlife and minerals. By using social science approaches, the book unites environmental, scientific, social, and political issues, as it is imperative we understand the holistic nature of land conflicts in nature-based tourism. Discussing the management theories and approaches to community-based tourism in communities where there are or were land conflicts is critical to understanding the current state and future of tourism in African rural spaces. This volume determines the extent to which land reform impacts community-based tourism in Africa to develop resilient destination strategies and shares solutions to existing land conflicts to promote conservation and nature-based tourism.

The book will be of great interest to students, academics, development experts, and policymakers in the field of conservation, tourism geography, sociology, development studies, land use, and environmental management and African studies.
