With more than 2000000 Canada has the largest number of lakes of any country on earth. It also has the longest coast line, but most of it is located in the Canadian Arctic and therefore covered with ice. 70 % of the land are covered by natural vegetation, mostly in tundra and mountanous areas. However, Canada reaches southwards to 42° latitude (Point Pelee National Park) with more moderate climate, too. About 5 billion birds migrate every summer for breeding to the forests of Canada. For protection of nature and enjoyment of the people around 40 National Parks have been established so far, covering more than 3% of the total land area, and each of the provinces has et least one national park. Apart from that, BirdLife International has designated 325 areas as IBAs (Important Bird Areas),these are sites of global importance for the conservation of bird life. So wherever you stay in Canada, you have a good chance to go bird-watching.
