Estonia is the northernmost of the Baltic states. The climate is cool and temperate, the elevations range from sea level to 318 m. The landscape consists of forest and hill country rich in lakes, with many bogs, and more than 50% of the area is forested. BirdLife International has designated more than 60 areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area),an impressive number for such a small country. Five national parks and hundreds of protected areas have been established, including 11 wetlands under the RAMSAR Convention. Due to its geographical location, Estonia offers important resting places for arctic migratory birds. In addition, Estonia is of international importance as a breeding area for the Great Snipe and as a breeding area for 8 of the 9 European woodpecker species. Last but not least, the excellent infrastructure makes Estonia an outstanding destination for bird watchers.
This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of Estonia in color. As a bonus, links to HD videos of more than 80 bird species are included.
