The Cradle of Civilization: Syria's Ancient History

Syria sits at the crossroads of ancient civilizations, boasting a history that spans over 8,000 years. The ancient city of Palmyra, also known as "the Bride of the Desert," was a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvel of Roman architecture. Its breathtaking temples, colonnades, and amphitheaters were a testament to the ingenuity and artistic skills of the people who once called this city home.

Aleppo, one of Syria's largest cities, was renowned for its bustling markets, exquisite handicrafts, and stunning medieval architecture. Its historic citadel, a formidable fortress that stood as a symbol of power and resilience, provided panoramic views of the city's vibrant streets below.

Mesmerizing Landscapes and Natural Wonders

Beyond its remarkable historical sites, Syria also boasted a diverse range of landscapes and natural wonders. From the fertile valleys of the Orontes and Euphrates rivers to the awe-inspiring beauty of the Syrian Desert, the country offered breathtaking scenery that left visitors in awe.

The coastal city of Latakia, with its golden beaches and crystal-clear waters, was a popular destination for relaxation and leisure. Its vibrant culture and delicious cuisine mesmerized tourists who marveled at the blending of influences from different civilizations that had left their mark on this coastal gem.

The ancient city of Bosra, known for its impressive Roman theater, was surrounded by lush greenery and fertile fields. This oasis in the desert was a testament to the adaptability and resilience of the Syrian people, who had mastered the art of agriculture in an otherwise challenging environment.

Culinary Delights: A Gastronomic Journey

No exploration of Syria can be complete without delving into its vibrant culinary scene. Syrian cuisine was a harmonious blend of flavors, influenced by the Ottoman Empire, Persian traditions, and Levantine culture.

Whether it was the aromatic spices of Aleppo's famous kebabs, the mouthwatering delicacies of Damascus, or the delectable meze spreads offered in restaurants throughout the country, Syria's cuisine tantalized taste buds and left a lasting impression on food enthusiasts.

Moreover, the warmth and hospitality of the Syrian people were reflected in their tradition of welcoming guests with open arms and treating them to an abundance of delicious dishes.

A Journey Cut Short: The Impact of the War

Tragically, the ongoing war in Syria has left a devastating mark on the nation and its people. Countless lives have been lost, cultural heritage has been destroyed, and millions have been displaced.

Syria's rich history, once embraced by visitors from around the world, is now overshadowed by images of destruction and despair. However, by learning about Syria before the war, we can honor its past and preserve its memory while hoping for a brighter future.

As the conflict continues, it is essential not only to support humanitarian efforts but also to remember and celebrate the enchanting Syria that existed before the war, ensuring its legacy lives on in our hearts and minds.

Syria before the war was a nation of captivating beauty, incredible history, and welcoming hospitality. From the ancient cities and archaeological treasures to the breathtaking landscapes and mouthwatering cuisine, it was a destination not to be missed.

While the current state of Syria may seem bleak, it's crucial to remember the Syria that once flourished. By keeping its memory alive, we can support efforts to rebuild and restore the nation's cultural heritage, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Let us not forget the Syria that was, and let us work towards a world where future generations can experience the wonders of this extraordinary country firsthand.

In 2004, Alex Klaushofer took a bus across the Anti-Lebanon mountains and found herself in Damascus under Bashar al Assad. Sharing a flat with students, she heard about the hopes and fears of the young, met some of Syria’s main political dissidents and witnessed one of the first protests against the authoritarian regime that had ruled the country for the past four decades. The Lost World of Damascus offers a rare insight into life in Syria in the early part of the twenty-first century. First published by Signal Books as a chapter in Paradise Divided: A portrait of Lebanon, it is reprinted here with an and a postscript. Please note that, at around 10,000 words, this is a short read.
