Step 1: Receiving the Audit Notice
The first step in the IRS audit process is receiving the audit notice. This notice typically arrives via mail and details the specific items under scrutiny. It's essential to act promptly upon receiving this notice and avoid any delays that could lead to further complications.
Step 2: Preparation
Once you receive the audit notice, it's time to prepare. Gathering all relevant documents, such as receipts, bank statements, and tax returns, is crucial in supporting your claims and providing accurate information to the IRS. Organize your records systematically to ensure easy accessibility during the audit.
The IRS Audit Roadmap provides detailed guidance on which documents to collect, how to organize them, and what potential red flags auditors may look for. Being fully prepared will enhance your confidence and reduce stress during the audit.
Step 3: The Audit Process
During the audit, an IRS agent will examine your records and request additional information or clarification regarding specific items. It's essential to be cooperative and transparent with the agent while presenting your case clearly and concisely.
The IRS Audit Roadmap highlights common audit techniques the IRS employs and provides tips on effectively responding to these techniques. Understanding the auditors' perspectives can help you better anticipate their concerns and present a convincing argument in favor of your tax positions.
Step 4: Resolution
After the audit is complete, the IRS will inform you of their findings. There are three possible outcomes: no change, agreed changes, or disagreed changes. The appropriate course of action will vary depending on the outcome.
If no changes are made to your tax return, the audit concludes, and you can proceed with peace of mind. In case of agreed changes, you may need to make additional payments or amend your tax return accordingly. Disagreed changes may require further negotiation or appeal.
Step 5: Appeal Process
If you disagree with the findings of the audit, you have the right to appeal. The IRS Audit Roadmap sheds light on the appeals process and provides valuable insights on building a strong case for your appeal.
Engaging professional assistance, such as a tax attorney or certified public accountant experienced in audits, can significantly increase your chances of a successful appeal. They can guide you through the complexities of the process and help craft compelling arguments to support your case.
Navigating through an IRS audit can be a daunting experience, but with the IRS Audit Roadmap as your guide, you can feel more confident and prepared. Remember, proper preparation, cooperation, and understanding of the audit process are key to achieving a favorable outcome.
While we hope you never find yourself being audited, having knowledge of the IRS Audit Roadmap can provide peace of mind and empower you to take control of the situation if it ever arises.

Have you received a notice from the IRS that you have been selected for an audit? Are you wondering why you were selected and unsure of what comes next? Are you worried that you may have understated your income or overstated deductions and may face penalties and interest or worse?
My name is William D. Hartsock. I am the Chairman of the San Diego Bar Association, Pro Se Program, owner of http://TheTaxLawyer.com and founder of a tax law firm that is comprised of tax attorneys, CPAs, enrolled agents and bookkeepers. My firm has been aggressively representing clients before the IRS, FTB and EDD since 1982. This book will allow you to get back to sleeping soundly at night, by giving you the information that you absolutely must know when being audited.
An IRS audit isn’t an intuitive process. There isn’t much about IRS rules or procedures that make sense unless you have an immense amount of formal training and experience in tax law. The average taxpayer is simply flying blind as soon as they open the initial audit notice.
That is why I have created this roadmap. This is a basic guide that will help you through the various stages, options and strategies involved in IRS audits.
This book isn’t going to try to turn you into a tax lawyer. If you are not already a tax attorney, you probably shouldn’t try to become one. Instead, this book is going to give you a quick and simple understanding of what you absolutely must know in order to navigate an audit and make the best decisions possible throughout the process.
The US government has given the IRS incredible power to demand your time and attention, to gain access to your financial records and personal assets, and to act as both prosecutor and judge when it comes to audits.
There is good news! In order to provide balance to the power of the IRS, wide ranging rules, protections and procedures have been established in order to protect taxpayer’s rights.
Don’t waste another minute worrying about the unknown, and don’t make the mistake of letting an Auditor manipulate you into giving up your rights and procedural protections, just because you didn’t know about them.
An IRS Audit must be taken seriously, and this book is a great place for you to start. So, jump in and start reading!
