Mastering the basic blues chords is crucial for any aspiring blues guitarist. Start by familiarizing yourself with the essential open chords such as C, D, E, F, and G. These chord shapes will be the building blocks of your blues rhythm guitar playing.
2. Incorporate Swing Rhythm:
Blues music is often played with a swing rhythm, emphasizing the offbeat. To achieve this swing feel, focus on accentuating the upstrokes and adding syncopation to your strumming pattern. Experiment with different rhythmic variations to create a unique and infectious groove.
3. Master the 12-Bar Blues Progression:
The 12-Bar Blues progression is the backbone of countless blues songs. Understanding this progression will enable you to play along with almost any blues tune. The standard 12-Bar Blues follows a specific chord sequence, usually in the key of E, A, or G. Familiarize yourself with the structure and variations of this timeless progression to enhance your blues rhythm guitar playing.
4. Explore Blues Riffs and Turnarounds:
Riffs and turnarounds are essential elements of blues guitar playing. Riffs are short melodic phrases that are repeated throughout a song, adding a catchy and memorable element. Turnarounds, on the other hand, are musical phrases that help transition between different sections of a song. Incorporate these techniques into your rhythm playing to infuse your blues guitar with flavor and dynamics.
Using the Right Gear
While technique and skill are vital, having the right gear can significantly enhance your blues rhythm guitar playing:
1. Choose the Right Guitar:
When it comes to playing the blues, the choice of guitar is essential. Opt for a guitar with a warm and vibrant tone. Traditional choices include Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, or a vintage-style hollow-body guitar. Experiment with different guitars to find the one that resonates with your playing style.
2. Set Up Your Amplifier:
Blues guitar sounds best when played through a tube amplifier. These amplifiers provide a warm and harmonically rich tone that complements the blues genre perfectly. Experiment with different amp settings to find the sweet spot for your desired tone.
Playing the blues rhythm guitar is an enriching experience that opens the doors to a captivating genre of music. By mastering the essential techniques and understanding the nuances of blues rhythm guitar, you can transport yourself and your audience to a world of raw emotions and unforgettable melodies. This in-depth blues rhythm guitar text is core curriculum of the University of Southern California's Studio Guitar Department, which is part of the prestigious Flora L. Thornton School of Music, located in Los Angeles, California. It features eighteen twelve-bar blues rhythm guitar accompaniments in the style of guitarists such as Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Nine of the songs use a shuffle feel and nine use a straight eighth note feel. The play along online audio contains two versions of each of the eighteen songs in the book. The first version has the guitar part and the second version is without the guitar. This gives you the ability to play along with the guitar part as a guide and also to play along with the track as the only guitarist.
The examples are written using traditional musical notation and tablature. Included for each song is a short description of the important points to consider when learning each example. The book presents songs that will expand the guitarist's vocabulary by presenting a variety of different ways a guitarist can play through the twelve bar blues. A number of different chord variations, keys and tempos are used in demonstrating these eighteen idiomatic rhythm guitar parts that have been used by the masters.
