The Background of Owen Hart
Owen Hart was born on May 7, 1965, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, into a legendary wrestling family. He was the youngest son of Stu and Helen Hart and part of the renowned Hart wrestling dynasty. With wrestling running in his blood, Owen began his professional career in the 1980s, emulating the footsteps of his brothers Bret and Keith.
Over the years, Owen developed a reputation as an exceptional in-ring performer. His high-flying maneuvers, technical skills, and ability to engage the crowd made him a fan favorite. However, what truly set him apart was his playful and mischievous personality.
The Art of the Rib
A rib, in wrestling lingo, refers to a practical joke or a prank played on fellow wrestlers or backstage personnel. Ribs have been prevalent in the wrestling industry for decades, with Owen Hart being one of the masters of this craft. He had a unique ability to lighten the mood and keep the locker rooms entertained with his antics.
Owen's pranks ranged from harmless jokes to complicated setups, often leaving his colleagues in splits or shaking their heads in disbelief. Some of his ribbing highlights include:
The Blue Blazer's Mysterious Alter Ego
Owen Hart portrayed the character of The Blue Blazer, a masked superhero, during his time in the WWF. However, he would sometimes show up as a different Blue Blazer version, complete with a fake mustache, in an attempt to confuse both fans and fellow wrestlers. This rib became legendary, with the audience eagerly anticipating the alternate Blue Blazer's arrival.
The Artificial Flatulence Machine
While on tour, Owen Hart once pranked legendary wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin by secretly hiding an artificial flatulence machine in his bag. As Steve Austin addressed the audience in the ring, Owen activated the machine, causing Austin to break character and the crowd to erupt in laughter.
Stories from the Road
Owen's ribbing extended beyond the wrestling ring to the road. His mischievous nature often resulted in hilarious and unforgettable stories among the wrestlers. Some of these stories include:
The Hardest Working Man in Show(biz) Restroom Prank
Owen and his tag team partner, The British Bulldog, were notorious for their practical jokes on the road. On one occasion, they decided to play a prank on their fellow wrestler, Triple H. Owen and The British Bulldog, knowing Triple H's meticulous grooming habits, filled his boots with shaving cream. Triple H, unsuspectingly putting on his boots before a match, found himself covered in cream. This led to a backstage laughing frenzy, with Triple H eventually joining in on the joke.
The Intercontinental Championship and the 1-2-3 Kid's Revenge
The 1-2-3 Kid, a wrestler known for his light-heartedness, once decided to turn the tables on Owen. After Owen played several ribs on him, the 1-2-3 Kid plotted his revenge. As the two were scheduled to wrestle for the Intercontinental Championship belt, the 1-2-3 Kid managed to secretly replace the belt with a toy replica. When it was time for the match, Owen's expression turned from confidence to bewilderment, leaving everyone stunned. The 1-2-3 Kid had successfully pulled off an unforgettable rib on a notorious prankster.
Owen's Legacy
Tragically, Owen Hart's career was cut short on May 23, 1999, when he suffered a fatal accident during a stunt at a WWF pay-per-view event. The wrestling world mourned the loss of a talented performer and a beloved prankster. Owen Hart's legacy lives on through the memories of his incredible ribs, pranks, and stories.
Although Owen's pranks earned him a reputation as a joker, he was simultaneously respected for his in-ring abilities and professionalism. His unique combination of humor and skill made him a beloved figure among his peers and fans alike.
While wrestling continues to entertain fans around the world, it is important to remember the lighter side of the sport. Owen Hart's ultimate anthology of ribs, pranks, and stories serves as a testament to the camaraderie and laughter that exists in the wrestling business.
So, the next time you watch a wrestling match or hear a backstage story, remember the mischievous charisma of Owen Hart and his everlasting impact on the world of professional wrestling.
