Utah’s West Desert is a vast sparsely populated region that occupies almost one-third of the state’s total land area. It is an arid wilderness, and because few people live there it is often dismissed as an empty, uninteresting badland with nothing much to offer. But nothing could be further from the truth. The West Desert is full of treasures just waiting to be discovered. With a little effort you can visit nineteenth century mining camps, homesteads, and remnants of the Pony Express trail. There are places where the Paleo-Indians left behind their ancient rock art thousands years ago. There are volcanic lava tubes to explore and hot springs to soak in. There are herds of wild horses and prong-horn antelope to photograph, and there are also many amazing rockhounding opportunities in Utah’s West Desert. Topaz Mountain is probably the best place in the United States to collect samples of Topaz and Beryl, and the Wheeler Formation near Marjum Canyon is equally well known as a place to collect 500-million-year-old fossils of trilobites and other arthropods from the Cambrian Period.
This book will tell you where to go in the West Desert, what you can expect to see, and what kinds of roads or trails you can expect. It includes many destinations that are not well known, and, where necessary, GPS coordinates are included.
