The solid wooden pivot hinges fitting snugly into hard granite sockets perform their final daily task. The doors had been open all day and their leaves had been folded against the inside walls. They have been tucked away, almost hidden, for hours.

Now is the time for the two flat slabs of decorated teak to come back together. Each door has an effigy painted on it. The shadows and the diminishing light inside the temple make these hard to define.

The temple keeper closes the right door first. The setting sun shines on the door face and in an instant hidden colours sparkle. The reds and gold, dark and lifeless in the shade, are suddenly filled with fire and energy. It is as if the image on this door has suddenly come alive. A fierce general dressed in full armour with a pale face is now in full view. He looks threatening and magnificent. The other door bangs to meet its mate and the colours of another general explode into life. This mighty military man has a black face and a big black bushy beard.

The two generals are now face to face. They have established their presence and it is clear that nothing will pass between them.

The temple keeper locks the two doors on the inside by passing a single strong wooden pole through four wooden loops securely fixed to the doors. From the outside it is now impossible to open the doors unless the pole is broken. The minder, confident that the joss house is secure, now shuffles through the shadows to his home where his tai-tai is waiting.
