Are you aware kids are fascinated by nature discovery?
Taking time to help them get to know the birds who share our habitat is a wonderful pastime for families.
Though most of us don't live in the thick of natural reserves, almost any habitat has a variety of birds to captivate a child's interest.
Any time of year is excellent for observing birds. Each season offers new insights into how birds cope within the environment.
During spring and fall, mass migration of some birds takes place — an outstanding sensation.
Children begin to notice relationships and differences in birds, and that builds their skill for identifying birds. But the enjoyable part of bird watching (or birding) is witnessing bird behavior.
With vast bird-watching experience, your kids can refine their skills in concentration, reasoning, and observation. And they learn to deduce the hows and whys of bird behavior.
Observing birds in action — whether it be humorous or combative — is much more pleasure than just rattling off names! Whether you live among subdivisions, cornfields, lakes, streams, or near a river, you can put these bird-watching basics to good use with your kids.
Do you know it's the stuff family ties are forged on? Please teach Children Good Birding Manners— like to be respectful of habitat and neighbors' yards. Don't shake trees, stone birds, take eggs, or wreck nests. Walk slowly and quietly. Point out birds, don't yell.
Take pictures with a camera, nothing else. Leave grounded (fledgling) birds alone; their mom is probably nearby waiting for you to leave before she supports it back to the nest. (It's a tale that birds can smell and refuse the human connection.)
Keep pets like wild dogs leashed, so they don't chase beautiful birds, inconvenience neighbors, or destroy fragile habitats. Take only memories away with you and leave only footprints behind.
Dress, so you don't invite poisonous ivy or insect bites. Bring binoculars (or spotting scope),so your kids can focus on details, like bird color or beak shape.
A camera, notebooks, or a sketch pad and pencils help kids focus on detail and allow them to reflect on what they observe. A notepad and pencil for recording species are handy, too. (Kids can keep a yearly bird record to track bird population increase or decrease.)
Above all, your backyard can be an excellent bird habitat, particularly if you offer a landscape with good bird benefits for eating, drinking, nesting, and finding shelter from predators.
Have kids provide fresh water daily in birdbaths and fill bird feeders as demanded. Your kids can tend your bird-friendly garden, too.
