Oman is located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula and has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean. The 250 km long narrow strip of coast is a fertile plain, but the central, largest part of Oman is occupied by the Inner Desert (Jiddat al-Harasis). Parallel to the coast in the north runs a mountain range, the Hajar Mountains, which reaches almost 3000 m altitude. The interior is very hot and dry, the coastal plains are humid. The bird world is extraordinarily diverse for such a small country. While there are fewer than 100 breeding birds in the country, the country is on one of the main bird migration routes in the world. In addition, many species of birds hibernate here. There are a number of nature reserves in Oman. Of particular ornithological interest are the 9 Dimaaniyat Islands and the Khawrs on the Dhofar Coast; however, access to the protected areas requires some preparation. The Jebel Samhan Nature Reserve is 4500 km² in size and offers a fantastically rugged landscape with many breeding spots for rare birds. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of Oman in color. As a bonus, links to HD videos of more than 85 bird species are included.
